The History of Bottecchia Cycles

In this day and age, there are already a wide selection of bicycles that will go well with the diverse taste, style and routine of various cyclists. But among the bicycles that are available in the market today, Bottecchia cycle stands out from the rest.

Nonetheless, Bottecchia cycle has never reaches success these days if it wasn’t from its glorious past. So let’s take a look at the wonderful and victorious journey of Bottecchia cycles.

Well, back in the day around 1909, a frame-maker craftsman named Teodoro Carnielli, from Vittorio Veneto, repairs and constructs bikes. He initially supports the Local Bikes Association and then later on he became the president of the organization. Carnielli recognized the enormous talent of Ottavio Bottecchia right away. Thus, he asked him to make use of the magic moment by producing one Bottecchia bike.

And so, in 1926, Ottavio Bottecchia began working with Teodoro Carnielli and starts manufacturing racing bikes, making use of his knowledge in Tour de France.

In 1930, after Bottecchia's death, the Carnielli family takes the business forward and makes Bottecchia a well-known bike brand name in Europe, and exporting to the US with great success. On the whole, the business expanded under the Carnielli family.

Throughout the years, the small Carnielli workshop gradually develops into an industry. And there are around 100 workers who build Bottecchia bikes between 1930 and 1940.

In 1951, Guido Carnielli, son of Teodoro has a big idea. He wanted to create a bike that can be used standing still, helpful for physical rehabilitation. Thus, it was the first Cyclette in the world. At the dawn of 1960s, Guido has another ground-breaking idea. At the same time, this is also the period of economic boom in Italy and more and more people have the opportunity to buy a car.

At the end of the sixties, the old Teodoro passes on the baton to his sons Guido and Mario. In 1973, the world’s first folding bike was produced and it was very successful in Europe.

Yet in 1997, Bottecchia was acquired by the Turato family who has had two generations of history in bike manufacture – the Cicli Esperia.

In 2006, Bottecchia sells over 50,000 bikes throughout Europe and looks to expand outside of Europe considering the US, Asia and the Pacific. If truth be told, there are already over 50,000 Bottecchia bikes that were sold in Europe at that point. It was also, in 2006 when Bottecchia cycles assign exclusive distributors in Australia and New Zealand.

Today, Bottecchia cycles produces around 70 models in order to meet every kind of demand, and its earnings increases year by year.

When you come right down to it, the success of Bottecchia cycle was built with passion, enthusiasm and courage. Not only that, when taken as a whole, its journey was all about dedication and basic knowledge.
